We vacationed around the Puget
Sound in 1980--and then moved to Redmond, WA in 1981. The twenty plus years
we have lived in the Northwest we have spent as much of our spare time as
possible exploring and enjoying our region.
There is so much to do here it
is hard sometimes to choose. One thing we have learned though, is that
because of the mountains and sea that surround us, our weather forecasting
is frequently less than accurate. For this reason, most of the locals
actually will choose what to do and where to go only a short time before
their departure.
For vacationers, this translates this way: you are probably better
finding a central point to the main attractions you wish to see and then day
tripping rather than doing a circuit of the area. That way, you can plan
each day's activities based on the weather. For example, if you want to see
Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helen and The Olympic Rain Forest, (each of which is
about a two hour drive from Tacoma), you could plan a night at an inn
located at each attraction. However, it could rain on you every day because
the weather pattern was moving the same direction you were. On the other
hand by staying centrally, you could pick the sunny day at each one for your
day to visit them.
Please also be aware of the difficulty in catching island ferries on
weekends and summertime. You can literally waste a day waiting in ferry
lines. If you are going island hopping, allow the time to enjoy it!
